Start with silence

During the summer break we have all witnessed on the news how the human suffering in Gaza has taken horrifying, unimaginable forms. While the Dutch caretaker government at least interrupted their summer recess to discuss the genocide in Gaza, our Executive Board remained silent. In spite of the fact that Israel is currently striking Gaza with dehumanizing famine and a brutal takeover of Gaza City, the human rights committee that was installed by our board to review current research projects in collaboration with Israeli partners will only resume its tasks during fall, with no defined timeline.
There is no time for more stalling. Our board has to take action now.
What can we do as lecturers? LU staff members have already made their voices heard through demonstrations, walk-outs, teach-ins, letters and petitions. We were met with silence. Are we just going to start teaching our classes in the new semester, back to work as if nothing is going on? No.
No business as usual.
We call on you to participate in the action “Start with Silence”. Join a collective silent protest by starting your first class(es) of the semester with a moment of silence. A silence that calls for action: Leiden University, boycott Israel.
(1) Download the PowerPoint presentation with the button above, and add it to the opening of your first lecture’s slides. Feel free to adjust the text in the slides as you see fit.
(2) At the opening of your first class, explain to your students why you open the year like this and what this action means.
(3) Invite your students to join in a moment of silence in solidarity and protest. You can give unwilling students the opportunity to take a break and return to class later.
(4) Have a moment of silence. The length of the silence is up to you - 2 minutes, 2 hours, or anything in between. You can use the moment of silence as a steppingstone to discussion, or move on with your class right after. In any case, we encourage you to start this academic year with a moment of silent resistance.

De afgelopen zomer hebben we allemaal op het nieuws kunnen hoe zien hoe het menselijk lijden in Gaza verschrikkelijke, ondenkbare vormen heeft aangenomen. Terwijl het demissionaire Nederlandse kabinet tenminste nog het zomerreces onderbrak voor een debat over de genocide in Gaza, bleef ons College van Bestuur onbewogen. Ondanks het feit dat Israël momenteel een onmenselijke hongernood veroorzaakt en Gaza stad op brute wijze heeft ingenomen, pakt de mensenrechtencommissie die door het CvB is aangesteld om lopende onderzoeksprojecten met Israëlische partners te beoordelen haar taken in het najaar pas weer op, met een onbepaald tijdspad.
Er is geen tijd voor nog meer uitstel. Ons college van bestuur moet nu actie ondernemen.
Wat kunnen we doen als docenten? Stafleden van de UL hebben het afgelopen anderhalf jaar hun stem al luid en duidelijk laten horen door middel van demonstraties, walk-outs, teach-ins, brieven en petities. Hier is nauwelijks gehoor aan gegeven. Gaan we nu gewoon van start met lesgeven in een nieuw academisch jaar, weer aan het werk alsof er niets aan de hand is? Nee.

We roepen je op om mee te doen aan de actie “Start met Stilte”. Sluit je aan bij een collectief zwijgend protest door je eerste college(s) van het jaar met een moment van stilte te beginnen. Een stilte die oproept tot actie: Universiteit Leiden, boycot Israël.
(1) Download de bijgevoegde powerpointpresentatie met de button hierboven, en voeg deze toe aan het begin van de powerpoint slides voor je eerste college. Het staat je vrij om de tekst in de slides naar eigen inzicht aan te passen.
(2) Leg aan het begin van je college uit aan studenten waarom je het academische jaar op deze manier start en wat deze actie betekent.
(3) Nodig je studenten uit om met samen jou een moment van stilte te nemen in solidariteit en protest. Je kan studenten die dit niet willen de mogelijkheid geven om een korte pauze te nemen en later weer aan te schuiven bij het college.
(4) Neem een moment stilte. Je kan de stilte gebruiken als een opmaat tot gesprek, of direct verder gaan met je gebruikelijke college. Hoe dan ook moedigen we je aan om het academisch jaar te beginnen met een moment van stil verzet.
